Big Changes Coming to MTD for Income Tax

What is MTD for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD ITSA) is the UK government’s initiative to modernise the tax system. Instead of submitting an annual Self-Assessment return, affected taxpayers will need to:
Keep digital records of their income and expenses.
Submit updates to HMRC quarterly using approved software.
File a final declaration at year-end instead of a traditional tax return.

The latest Spring Statement brings major updates to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, and if you’re a self-assessment taxpayer, these changes could impact you.

New Threshold Alert! From April 2028, the income threshold for MTD ITSA will drop to £20,000, bringing nearly 900,000 more taxpayers into the digital tax system.

When Does This Kick In? If you earn over £20,000, you’ll need to comply from the 2026/27 tax year, with your first digital return due by 31 January 2028.

Exemptions & Deferrals: The government is introducing new exemptions for those who face genuine barriers to digital filing, more details to come!

No HMRC Online Service? That’s right, HMRC won’t be offering a year-end online filing system for MTD taxpayers. Instead, you’ll need to rely on third-party software to submit your return.

The Benefits of MTD

Fewer Mistakes, Less Stress – Digital record-keeping and accredited software help reduce errors, making tax returns more accurate and compliant.

Save Time & Effort – Keeping your records updated digitally means a more streamlined and efficient tax process—no more scrambling at the last minute!

Real-Time Financial Overview – With MTD, your accounts will be up to date, giving you and HMRC a clearer picture of your tax position, payments, and liabilities.

What’s Next?

With these big shifts ahead, now’s the time to start preparing. Stay tuned for further updates to help you navigate the changes with ease!

While MTD may take some adjustment, it’s designed to make tax reporting easier in the long run. Getting organised early will help ensure a smooth transition—so don’t leave it until the last minute!
